The branded merch industry has a $28 billion blind spot.

Companies spend money on promotional products with zero visibility into what happens after they hand them out. Did anyone use the tumbler? Did the trade show pen generate a single lead? Nobody knows — until now.

A DeZign Insight changes everything. Every item gets a trackable QR code. Every scan is logged with device, location, and timestamp. Every campaign gets a real ROI grade — not a guess.

Best Practices

A QR code nobody scans is just decoration.

Whether people scan comes down to three things: what the label promises, how the code is printed, and what the page asks for. This is what we've learned works.

1 · The hook

Put the reward on the label, not the instruction.

Nobody scans because a label says “scan me.” They scan because it promised something worth twenty seconds. The formula is reward + time + certainty: “Win the jacket” is the reward, “20 seconds” takes away the fear of a long form, and “drawn at 4pm” makes it real.

CLEAR MARGIN · KEEP EMPTY WIN THE JACKET 20 SEC · DRAWN AT 4PM
2 · The code itself

QR layout rules we follow on every item

Dark on lightDark code on a light background. Light-on-dark and low-contrast brand colors scan poorly on many phones.
Clear marginEmpty space on every side — no art, text or seams inside it. It’s how the camera finds the edge.
Size for distanceRoughly 1 unit of code per 10 units of scanning distance. Arm’s length needs about 2.5 cm (1 in); a banner 3 m away needs about 30 cm.
Flat surfacesFlat or gently curved only. Small items (pens, stress balls) carry the code on a card, tag or packaging instead.
Print it, don’t stitch itScreen print, pad print, DTF, transfer or full color. Embroidery blurs the squares, and we test laser engraving on the actual finish.
One code per itemEvery item type gets its own code, so your report can tell you which one actually worked.
Where the code goesSize & positionWatch for
Table tent / counter card4–5 cm (about 2 in); the offer in bigger type than “scan me”Scanned from arm’s length. Tracked as its own item.
Banner, backdrop, table throwSized for distance — 3 m away needs about 30 cmChest-to-eye height, never down by the floor.
T-shirt, hoodie, polo7–8 cm (3 in) on the upper back or a large left chest; 10 cm+ if people scan someone walking byPrinted, not embroidered.
Tumbler, bottle, mugFlattest face, opposite the handle, narrow relative to the curveWe test engraving on dark metal before production.
Tote, backpack, drawstringOutside face, upper third, on a flat panelBig is fine — it’s a walking billboard.
Notebook, padfolioPrinted cover or bellyband; inside cover for a follow-up codeDebossing won’t scan — it has to be printed.
Pens, stress balls, small itemsOn an insert card, hang tag or the packagingThe card still carries that item’s own tracking.
Lanyard / badge cardAt least 2.5 cm on the badge insert, facing outGreat for staff contact cards at events.

These sizes are rules of thumb. Before anything goes to production we print a proof at actual size on the actual material and scan it on iPhone and Android, on cellular data, from the real distance.

3 · The page they land on

Landing pages that people actually finish

Lead with the offerThe heading is what they get — “Your power bank is waiting” — not a generic welcome.
One page, one jobCapture, reveal or survey. A page that tries to do three things finishes none of them.
Three fields at a boothName, email and one or two tap-to-pick questions. Every extra field costs completions; phone numbers rarely earn their place.
Ask before you giveThe email comes before the promo code or download — people stop the moment they get what they came for.
Say what happens next“Drawn at 4pm — we’ll text the winner.” Certainty lifts completion.
Capture first, link out secondYour website or job application goes below Submit. Send them away first and the contact is gone.
Consent where it mattersRecruiting pages and photo uploads include a consent checkbox in your company’s own wording.
Your brand, automaticallyYour logo and colors load before the page appears — even on weak venue Wi-Fi.
A trade show page, top to bottom
  1. Heading — the offer: “Your power bank is waiting.”
  2. One line — what happens next and when.
  3. Pick your offer — optional, two or three choices.
  4. Name · Email · Company — plus one quick question.
  5. Submit
  6. Link — spec sheet or website, below Submit.
A career-fair page, top to bottom
  1. Heading — “First look at our internships.”
  2. One line — “A recruiter will email you this week.”
  3. Name · Email
  4. Two quick picks — graduation term, area of interest.
  5. Consent checkbox — your HR’s wording.
  6. Submit, then a link to your job application.

Claim it

The code on your product is permanent — what it does is not. If your offer changes after the event, we update the page and every item already in the field follows along.

4 · At the booth or table

Simple things that multiply scans

Claim, don’t grabKeep the premium item behind the table and hand it over after they show the submitted screen. The single biggest lever on booth results.
Your staff say the line“Scan that before you go — 20 seconds and you’re in the draw.” A code nobody mentions is wallpaper.
Posted draw times“Drawn at 11, 2 and 4” gives people a reason to scan now and come back later.
Make the prize visiblePut one on a stand at eye level. People scan for things they can see.
Codes where hands restCounter cards and table tents out-scan banners, because people scan what’s already in front of them.
A second chanceA good offer now, a better one next week. The people who scan twice are your warmest list.

Finally, a number next to your merch budget.

Pick the goal, and we set up the scorecard before a single item is printed. Two weeks after your event you get a report that answers the question your CFO is going to ask.

Your two-week report

The paragraph that saves your budget.

Two weeks after your event, you get a report built from your campaign — sent without you having to ask. It tells you what the merch produced, which item and which offer worked best, and what to change next time.

Then it keeps going: items people keep on their desk keep scanning for months, and you can change the offer behind the code at any time.

Sample report summaryAcme Industrial — what the spring trade show produced

We handed out 500 items. 92 people scanned (18% scan rate) and 61 gave us their details (66% of scanners).

Merchandise cost $4,500 — $74 per lead.

By item: the power bank produced 70% of the leads at $46 each. The pens produced none.

Next show: drop the pens, double the power banks, keep the jacket draw.

Illustrative example — your report uses your real numbers.

Questions

The questions people usually ask.

How do I know anyone will actually scan it?

You’ll know exactly — scan rate is one of the numbers on your dashboard. What drives it is what’s behind the code. A code that goes to a homepage gets ignored; one that leads to a prize draw, a reveal or a twenty-second form gets scanned. That’s why we pick the page to match why you’re handing the item out.

Nobody uses QR codes anymore, do they?

Every phone camera reads them with no app. QR codes feel dead because most of them go to a homepage, which wastes the scan. Ours go somewhere with a reason attached.

We already scan badges at trade shows. Why do we need this?

Keep doing it. A badge scan records everyone you scanned — including people who just wanted a pen. A scan of your item records someone choosing to raise their hand, tells you which item and offer did it, and keeps working weeks later when the badge scanner is packed away.

We already have a CRM (or an applicant tracking system).

This sits in front of it, not beside it. It captures the person at the moment they’re holding your item; the contacts are yours to export into your CRM, and recruiting pages hand candidates straight to your normal application. Your CRM has never been able to tell you which of the thousands of things you handed out produced any of those contacts.

Students (or visitors) won’t fill out a form for a water bottle.

Agreed — and we don’t ask them to. The bottle carries the offer: first look at internships, the interview questions you actually ask, a shot at the premium prize. The form is three fields with tap-to-pick questions and takes about twenty seconds.

What about privacy and consent?

We collect only what you choose — often just a name and email — with a consent checkbox in your company’s own wording. The responses belong to you and are yours to export.

What if our offer changes after the items are printed?

The code on the item is permanent; the page behind it isn’t. We update the page and every item already in the field follows the new offer.

What does it cost?

The platform, the dashboard and the reports are included with your A DeZign merchandise orders — no subscription, no setup fee, no credit card. We earn our margin on the merchandise you were going to buy anyway.
